The Blue Mountains in Sydney are one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world. Some archaeological surveys have found evidence that shows that people lived in the area as far back as the Pleistocene Epoch. The mountains were named after Governor Philip in 1788 and are made up of several smaller mountain ranges, including Carmarthen and Lansdowne. These are dotted with ancient eucalyptus trees, which give the area a unique blue hue.
