Luigi Ghirri

Luigi Ghirri was a pioneer of the contemporary Italian photography movement. His photographs capture the ironies of modernity, from the slickness of the automobile to the sexiness of women on the prowl. His works are also the stuff of legend, with the most notable being his series of self-portraits. He died of a heart attack at age forty-four, but he remains a major figure in the history of Italian photography.

Besides his photographs, he was a photographer who mastered the art of looking. In his famous series of self-portraits, Ghirri employs a technique called paisaje to bring his subjects into the picture. For him, the paisaje is a way of making visible, through the act of looking at things, the elusive Sinn von Platz.
