Boat tour of the islands of Murano and Burano

For an unforgettable exploration of Venice beyond its iconic sights, take a boat tour to Murano or Burano islands. Both can be covered within one day and offer visitors an insight into Venice's simpler side.

Burano is a vibrant fishing village that attracts fewer tourists than Venice and offers an authentic experience. Take a guided tour around the island with a local guide and be amazed by the vibrant colors of fisherman's homes or visit a lace factory for some retail therapy!

In Italy, and in particular on the islands of Murano and Burano, there is an excellent car rental service - bookingauto.com, as well as experienced guides and interesting excursions - excurzilla.com

Visit a glass factory

If you're a glass enthusiast, the Venetian Lagoon is home to several factories that craft their own items. On your boat tour, take time out to visit one of these facilities and witness firsthand how glass masters create masterpieces.

From the furnace where silica sand is fused together under intense heat to the gatherer who takes a small gob from the mass, blower who shapes it into shape and finisher who adds final touches - this entire process follows ancient traditions.

For those interested in discovering the techniques behind Murano glass art, consider attending one of its workshops. Experienced artists will demonstrate how to craft beads, miniature animals and simple shapes using this age-old technique of glass blowing.

Visit Burano

Murano is renowned for its glassblowing, but there are plenty of attractions on Burano to keep you occupied. Visit a glass factory, explore shops and take in the sunset on one of their cruises!

This small island in Venice boasts a vibrant history and stunning beauty. You can get there by water bus or taxi; its vibrant houses and delicate lace crafts add to the experience.

The Church of Santa Maria e San Donato is renowned for its 12th-century Byzantine mosaic pavement. Established by refugees from the mainland, legend has it that Saint Donatus' body and bones, as well as those of a dragon, were interred here in 1125.

The church is now a museum that displays displaced altarpieces, odd documents and plush vestments. It's worth visiting if you're in the area on weekends; it's located next to "Faro" vaporetto stop.

Eat at Al Gato Nero

On our boat tour of Murano and Burano islands, we stopped at Al Gato Nero restaurant - featured on one of Jamie Oliver's television programmes. With its excellent menu featuring some of Venice's best fish dishes, it was a must-visit!

This Michelin-starred restaurant is truly spectacular in its setting - hidden away in a walled vineyard on Mazzorbo Island, just a few miles from Burano and within easy walking distance of its iconic bridges that connect them. Not only is the decor stunning, but the cuisine also lives up to expectations.

The main attraction of the risotto di go (goby risotto) lies not just in its size or amount of rice you will devour, but rather that the bowl itself is made out of goby instead of pappardelle! This dish definitely warrants trying and it also makes for some stunning photos!

Wander the narrow alleys of Burano

Venice may be overrun with tourists, but Murano and Burano remain quieter and offer a more authentic view into local life. Take a boat tour to all three islands without the crowds for an unforgettable experience.

Start your trip in central Venice and board a water bus across the Venetian lagoon to Murano Island. Here, enjoy a guided stroll and visit a glass factory to witness how these traditional crafts are created.

Burano, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed island, is renowned for its exquisite lace-making tradition. Discover more of this fascinating craft on an exciting tour around the area that takes in colorful fishermen's homes and iconic landmarks like a leaning church tower.

Lacemaking on the island continues to be done by hand, however the artisanal craft has declined due to increased tourism and imports from Asia. In the absence of traditional lacemakers, some shops sell machine-made imitation lace at lower costs.
